Reducing your food miles, is not only ecologically sound, it means you are getting fresh products often harvested on, or just before the delivery day.
Due to the distance it has travelled to the supermarket, some so called 'fresh' produce can be many days old before it even appears on the shelves.
Supermarket fruit is often picked before its fully ripe, so that it has a longer shelf life, but this also means it 'ripens' in transit, without the fresh supply of nutrients it would normally receive if it was still attached to the plant.
Where are your purchases grown, have you checked?, were they air freighted from Africa, or shipped hundreds of miles from southern Europe?.
We are in the EU, and that's a good thing for many things, but it it does not mean we should buy carrots or potatoes that have been grown in Eastern Europe, or salad crops from Southern Europe, when we can buy locally grown and harvested products without all the transport cost and associated carbon emissions.
Buying locally grown produce ensures that you get the best quality produce perfectly ripe and full of natural flavour.
